Using the Power of Belief in your Business

By Paul Barrs

I remember a time during my teenage years when I was on surf patrol. This was a large part of my life as a young man because growing up on the beach was an integral part of my lifestyle just as it had been for my father, and his father before him.

This particular day however stood out, for two reasons; 1 – it was Boxing Day and the beach was absolutely packed, and 2 – the surf was massively HUGE (in truth the beach shouldn’t have even been open). However, being the day after Christmas, every Tom, Dick, Harry and his dog were out in the water; we felt it would be best if we could at least coral them into one single area. To top things off, it was pouring down rain and visibility was limited to about 100 meters.

As we sat huddled in our shelter I noticed on the far side of the beach some idiot heading for the water with his ‘flippers’ in hand. He was nowhere near the flagged area and a good 2 minute run from the lifeguard beach hut. The surf was pounding at about 2.5 metres, dumping directly onto a sand back roughly 400m off the beach; and this nutter was a good 600m from the flagged ‘safe area’.

Before he hit the water we (myself and the other lifeguards) were heading for our rescue gear. By the time we hit the water he had already been dragged half a kilometer offshore and was heading directly for the rock-face. Rarely did I feel fear when I was in the surf, but this day was one of them – NONE of us should have been in the water.

Mooloolaba Tri Athletes, Daren Mercer, Andy Roddick and the X-Factor (and me).

A little while back I had the pleasure of being able to watch two of the worlds great tennis players, Andy Roddick and James Blake, obliterate their respective opponents. This was a real treat for me because while I’ve always loved the game, I’d never yet seen it live, upfront and so close.

However, a thought struck me sidelong in the face while watching those titans before me struggle for supremacy…

What was it that made them so different?

OK, yes, one was “better” than the other, sure. That’s the obvious. But I asked myself, did one practice ‘less’ than the other? Probably not. And while I don’t know it for certain, I’d be dead sure that they both put in the same amount of hours, the same number of drills and the same number of repetitions as the other. They’d be foolish not to.

So what was it that made them different? Why was it that these two players and others like them were so elevated in their abilities when others who had done the same amount of work had far less capability?

Could it be pure genetics? It’s a good question, but I think not.

STOP – Think About What You’re Thinking About

There are many different aspect to personal and business success. Most of the articles I’ve read recently seem to focus more on the tools that we use rather than the one who wields them –

So let me ask you, how effective is a chisel and hammer in the hands of someone whose only a 1 year apprentice in sculpture? How well does than man or woman’s workmanship compare with the master sculpture?

Not well would me my guess.

Here’s the point – it doesn’t really matter how many “tools” or how many “techniques” or how many “programs” you’re got hold of if you yourself are not well skilled in using them. This of course is simple basics. But this philosophy also extends to the ‘why’ to use them, the ‘when’ to use them, and most importantly the ‘ability’ to use the consistently and without failure.

This is where ‘think about what you’re thinking about’ comes into play.

Have you ever been real excited about something new that came your way? Remember the last time that you made that commitment to purchase the latest program Online that promised success and after reading the sales copy you really believed that it would work for you… this time!

I remember such thought. We’ve all had them. But for some reason it doesn’t always seem to work out that way, does it.

Why?

Because it’s too easy to get side-tracked.

Sometimes we are side-tracked by external things; our family, friends, car problems, sports events and so on. Other times we are side-tracked by internal things; self-doubt, disbelief, failure… and so on.

Small Business Basics: The First 30 Minutes

The Morning Show (TV program)

By Paul Barrs

How much thought have you given to what you do first thing in the morning? Yes, I know, we all get up (some faster than others), often heading directly to the kitchen to grab that coffee or juice after a splash of water on the face. But that’s not what I’m talking about.

More so, I’m asking the question … what happens *after* that?

For some of us its prayer and reading time, others it’s hit the treadmill or pavement, for others it’s the morning paper – or a multitude of possible variations.

More important at the moment than ‘what do you do’, is “why am I asking?”

Fact: The first thirty minutes of any day is the best time for absorbing information deep into the conscious mind. Ask any leader in the field of learning and you’ll find that to be true.

Next question… ‘Why would we need to know this’?

Fact: If you don’t grow your mind above the level that it’s currently at, you cannot grow your business beyond the level that it’s currently at.

Therefore it’s a reasonable conclusion that if you grow your mind you will also grow your ability and therefore you can grow your business.

The Keys to Fast Learning (and how to save money on training programs).

By Paul Barrs (adapted from multiple online resources)

Although you may not be fully aware of it, we all learn in different ways – which simply means, we all achieve our peak learn capacity through different methods.

The point here is this – there is absolutely “no point” in you putting your staff though some training course offered from some company unless that course has been specifically designed to help you learn! And yes, yes; they all claim to be able to do this, but you are the one forking out the money….

Therefore – you know how you and your staff “learn”.

It’s quite simple really – all you need to do is show this article to your staff members (before you sign them up for some training program) and then approach the training provider to make sure that they offer *all* the various methods of training to ensure best results.
