James 3:13-18 asks a searching question: who is wise and understanding among you? True wisdom is not measured merely by knowledge, sharp words, or the ability to win an argument. James says wisdom is shown by good conduct and works done in the meekness of wisdom. This message contrasts the wisdom from above with the wisdom that is earthly, sensual, and demonic.
The study shows that bitter envy and self-seeking produce confusion and every evil thing. These are not small personality flaws to excuse. They are signs of wisdom that does not come from God. Heavenly wisdom, by contrast, is pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. The fruit reveals the root.
This message calls believers to examine the spirit behind their speech, decisions, and relationships. It is possible to sound religious while being driven by pride, competition, envy, or self-promotion. The wisdom from above leads to peace and righteousness. The encouragement is to seek God’s wisdom with humility, so that our lives, our words, and our conduct increasingly reflect Christ rather than the confusion of the world.
