Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple in faithful obedience to the law of God. Their offering of two birds shows that they were not wealthy, but they still honoured the Lord with what they had. Faithfulness is not measured by how impressive our circumstances appear, but by whether we trust and obey God within them.
At the temple they met Simeon, a just and devout man who had spent years waiting for the consolation of Israel. The Holy Spirit had promised that he would see the Messiah before he died. Led into the temple at the right moment, Simeon took Jesus in his arms and declared, “My eyes have seen Your salvation.”
Simeon recognised that Jesus had come not only for Israel, but as a light for the Gentiles. He also warned that Christ would reveal the thoughts of many hearts. Some would receive Him in faith, while others would oppose Him. Our response to Jesus, and especially to His cross, still reveals what is taking place within us.
Anna had also spent many years serving God through prayer and fasting. When she saw Jesus, she gave thanks and spoke about Him to those waiting for redemption. Simeon waited faithfully, Anna served faithfully, and both recognised Christ when He came. Their example encourages us to remain prayerful, patient and ready to speak about the hope we have found in Him.
