This opening study introduces the Book of Colossians bysetting the historical, cultural, and spiritual background for the whole series. Paul writes to a church he had not personally visited, yet one he deeply cared for through the ministry of Epaphras. Colossae was surrounded by mixed ideas, religious traditions, philosophical speculation, legalism, mysticism, and early forms of teaching that diminished the fullness and sufficiency of Christ.
The message reminds us why careful Bible study matters. We do not begin by asking only what a passage means to us personally, as if Scripture is shaped by our feelings or circumstances. We begin by asking what the passage means, who it was written to, what was happening at the time, and why the Holy Spirit preserved it for the people of God. Only then do we rightly apply the Word to our own lives.
Paul begins with grace and peace, and then draws attention to faith, love, and hope. These themes become foundational for the whole letter. The believer belongs both to a place on earth and to Christ in heaven. This study invites us to take Colossians seriously, to move beyond shallow thinking, and to be rooted more deeply in the truth of who Christ is and what He has done.
