James 5:14-16 addresses the one who is sick and instructs him to call for the elders of the church, that they may pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. This message treats the passage carefully and pastorally, recognising both the reality of sickness and the importance of bringing suffering into the fellowship and care of the church.
The study considers prayer, anointing, confession, and healing without turning the passage into mechanical formula. The focus remains on the Lord, not on superstition, performance, or pressure. The sick believer is not told to isolate in shame or despair, but to call for spiritual care. The elders are to pray in faith, and the church is reminded that prayer is not a last resort, but a real act of dependence upon God.
James also connects confession and prayer, reminding believers that sin, suffering, weakness, and restoration are matters to bring honestly before God. This message calls us to humility, care for one another, and confidence that the Lord hears the prayers of His people. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much, not because man is powerful, but because God is.
