After being rejected at Nazareth, Jesus travelled to Capernaum and continued teaching in the synagogues. The people were astonished because He did not rely upon the authority of earlier teachers. Jesus spoke with authority in Himself. His words carried the weight of truth because He was not merely explaining the Word of God – He is the Son of God.
That same authority was immediately displayed when a demon recognised Jesus as “the Holy One of God”. Jesus did not use lengthy rituals or dramatic methods. He simply commanded the unclean spirit to be silent and leave, and it obeyed. Later, Jesus entered Simon Peter’s home and healed his mother-in-law of a severe fever. By the end of the day, crowds were bringing people with many different illnesses, and Jesus compassionately laid His hands upon each one.
Luke carefully distinguishes physical sickness from demonic possession. Not every illness, emotional struggle or mental health condition is caused by a demon, and not every healing should be described as deliverance. Careless teaching in this area can cause real hurt. Jesus never responded to suffering people with accusation or shame. He met them with compassion, while showing that He has complete authority over both sickness and the spiritual realm.
The crowds wanted Jesus to remain with them, but He knew His purpose reached beyond one town. He had been sent to preach the kingdom of God to others as well. This passage gives us confidence without encouraging sensationalism. Whatever suffering we face, Jesus remains Lord. His Word has authority, His heart is compassionate, and His power is greater than anything that holds people in bondage.
