Luke places the birth of Jesus within a real moment in history. Caesar Augustus ordered a census, and Joseph was required to travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem because he belonged to the house of David. Mary went with him, even though the journey came at the most difficult time of her pregnancy.
Centuries earlier, the prophet Micah had said that the promised Ruler would come from Bethlehem. Mary and Joseph may have expected to remain in Nazareth, but God’s Word had already named the place. Through the decisions of rulers and circumstances beyond their control, the Lord brought them exactly where they needed to be.
The contrast is striking. Caesar sat at the centre of a vast empire, while Jesus was born in humble surroundings and laid in a manger because there was no room for Him. The true King entered the world without earthly ceremony, wealth or recognition. Yet this quiet birth marked the arrival of our Saviour.
There is real encouragement here when we cannot see how God’s promises will be fulfilled. He is able to work through history, governments, journeys and even unwelcome interruptions. What He has spoken will not fail. The God who kept His promise concerning Bethlehem remains faithful to His people today.
