After receiving Gabriel’s announcement, Mary travelled to visit Elizabeth. The news she carried was wonderful, but it was also enormous for a young woman to process alone. She went to someone who could listen, understand and share in what God was doing. We all need faithful people like that in our lives.
When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child within her leapt for joy, and she was filled with the Holy Spirit. She recognised that Mary was carrying her Lord and confirmed that what God had spoken would be fulfilled. Her response was humble. Even while enjoying her own long-awaited blessing, Elizabeth looked beyond herself and rejoiced in Christ.
Mary then praised God in the song often called the Magnificat. Her attention was not fixed upon her own importance, but upon the Lord’s strength, holiness, mercy and faithfulness. She rejoiced in “God my Saviour”, openly recognising her own need for salvation and giving all honour to Him.
Mary’s song reminds us that genuine worship makes much of God, not much of ourselves. He lifts the lowly, shows mercy to those who fear Him and remains faithful to promises made generations before. As our faith matures, may we become people who seek trusted fellowship, receive God’s Word with humility and allow our hearts to magnify the Lord.
