In Matthew 5:38-42, Jesus speaks to the familiar phrase, an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. This message explains that Jesus is not dismissing justice, nor is He teaching His people to love evil or enable abuse. Instead, He confronts the personal desire for retaliation – the impulse to make sure we get even when we have been wronged.
The passage calls us to consider the difference between justice and vengeance. Human hearts often turn legitimate concern for fairness into bitterness, pride, and retaliation. Jesus teaches a kingdom response that is radically different from the world’s instinct. His followers are called to show restraint, mercy, generosity, and trust in God, even when wronged.
This message helps us ask hard questions about how we respond when insulted, inconvenienced, mistreated, or asked to give more than expected. The call is not passive weakness, but strength submitted to God. We are invited to follow Christ, who entrusted Himself to the Father, and to live in a way that reflects grace rather than revenge.
