Matthew 7:21-23 is one of the most sobering passages in the words of Jesus. Not everyone who says, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of the Father. This message calls us to serious self-examination, not to drive us into despair, but to bring us to true assurance in Christ rather than false confidence in religious activity.
The passage shows that powerful words and impressive works are not the same as knowing Christ and being known by Him. Jesus speaks of people who appeal to prophecy, casting out demons, and mighty works, yet He says, I never knew you. The issue is not merely public ministry or religious language. The issue is relationship, obedience, repentance, and faith in the true Christ.
This message warns against building confidence on appearances, experiences, or the approval of others. The will of the Father is not empty performance but faith that bears fruit in obedience. We are called to come honestly before God, search the Scriptures, reject false assurance, and rest in Christ Himself – the One who saves, knows, and keeps His people.
