Colossians 3:18-4:1 brings the new life in Christ into the ordinary relationships of home and work. Paul speaks to wives, husbands, children, fathers, bond servants, and masters. These instructions are practical, but they are not merely social rules. They show how the Lordship of Christ reaches into marriage, parenting, employment, authority, responsibility, patience, and love.
The message handles the marriage instructions carefully. Wives are addressed in relation to what is fitting in the Lord, and husbands are commanded to love their wives and not be bitter towards them. Biblical headship is not a licence for harshness, pride, or selfish control. Husbands are called to selfless love, spiritual covering, patience, and care, remembering the way Christ loves His church.
Paul then speaks to children, fathers, workers, and masters. Children are called to obey their parents, and fathers are warned not to provoke their children lest they become discouraged. Workers are to serve heartily as to the Lord, not merely as people-pleasers, and those in authority are to treat others with justice and fairness, remembering they too have a Master in heaven. This study calls us to represent Christ faithfully in our homes, workplaces, and daily responsibilities.
