The birth of John the Baptist brought joy not only to Zacharias and Elizabeth, but to their whole community. God had shown great mercy to a woman who had waited many years for a child. On the eighth day, Elizabeth insisted that the boy be named John, just as Gabriel had instructed.
When Zacharias confirmed, “His name is John,” his speech returned and he immediately praised God. He had doubted earlier, but that failure was not the end of his story. The Lord corrected him, brought him back to obedience and allowed him to stand firmly upon the Word he had received. Our past failures do not have to decide our future faithfulness.
Filled with the Holy Spirit, Zacharias spoke of God’s covenant, mercy and salvation. The Lord had remembered His promises and was raising up a Saviour from the house of David. John would prepare the way, giving people knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of sins and pointing them towards the light and peace found in Christ.
John’s life would never be about drawing attention to himself. His calling was to prepare people for Jesus. That remains a helpful pattern for us. Wherever the Lord has given us influence, our task is not to build our own name, but to make Christ known. More of Him and less of us is a worthy prayer for every believer.
