Gabriel was sent to Nazareth, an ordinary town with little reputation, to speak with a young woman named Mary. She was betrothed to Joseph, a binding promise of marriage that had not yet been completed. Into that quiet and very ordinary setting came an announcement that would change the world.
Mary was told that she would bear a Son and call His name Jesus. He would be called the Son of the Highest, receive the throne of David and reign over a kingdom that would never end. His name points to the heart of His mission: the Lord saves. This Child would be the promised Messiah and the Saviour God’s people had been waiting for.
Mary asked how this could happen, not because she refused to believe, but because she wanted to understand. Gabriel explained that the Holy Spirit would come upon her and that the holy One born to her would be called the Son of God. He also reminded her of Elizabeth’s unexpected pregnancy, declaring that nothing would be impossible with God.
Mary’s answer is one worth carrying into our own walk: “Let it be to me according to your word.” She did not know every cost or difficulty that obedience would bring, but she placed herself in God’s hands. Mature faith does not need every detail before it obeys. It trusts the character of God and willingly says, “Lord, let Your Word be fulfilled in me.”
