Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Holy Spirit and came home to Nazareth. In the synagogue, He read from Isaiah 61 – good news for the poor, healing for the brokenhearted, liberty for captives and freedom for the oppressed. Then He made the remarkable declaration, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
Jesus stopped the reading before Isaiah’s words about the day of vengeance. His first coming brought the gracious offer of salvation and restoration. The people initially marvelled at His words, but familiarity soon became a stumbling block. They knew Him as Joseph’s son and wanted Him to prove Himself with miracles.
Jesus exposed the unbelief beneath their admiration. He reminded them of the widow of Zarephath and Naaman the Syrian, two Gentiles who received God’s mercy while many in Israel remained hardened. The crowd was willing to hear about grace until Jesus showed that it was not theirs to control or keep from others.
Their admiration turned to anger, and they tried to throw Jesus from the hill. Yet He passed through their midst and continued on His way. This passage asks us to receive Christ as He truly is, not merely as we expect Him to be. Pride resists correction, but humble faith welcomes the truth and trusts that God’s purposes cannot be stopped.
