After His baptism, Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness and tempted by the devil for forty days. He faced real hunger, physical weakness and pressure, yet remained completely obedient to the Father. Hebrews reminds us that He was tempted as we are, but without sin, and is therefore able to understand and help us in our own struggles.
The first temptation invited Jesus to meet a legitimate need on His own terms. Satan urged Him to turn stone into bread, but Jesus refused to act independently of the Father’s will. He answered, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.” Comfort and appetite could not be allowed to rule over obedience.
Satan then offered Jesus the kingdoms of the world without the suffering of the cross. It was a shortcut to glory, but it required false worship. Finally, he quoted Psalm 91 while twisting its purpose, tempting Jesus to test God rather than trust Him. The enemy still works in similar ways through selfish desire, attractive shortcuts and Scripture taken out of context.
Jesus answered each temptation with the Word of God and remained faithful. His victory is more than an example, because He succeeded where Adam and all of us have failed. He is the sinless Saviour who could bear our guilt. Yet His example still teaches us to know Scripture, reject shortcuts and choose the Father’s will even when obedience is costly.
