Colossians 3:12-17 shows what the new life in Christ is meant to look like. As the elect of God, holy and beloved, believers are told to put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, and long suffering. These are not decorative religious qualities. They are the clothing of the new man, the visible fruit of a heart being shaped by Christ.
The message gives particular attention to bearing with one another and forgiving one another. Forgiveness is not optional for followers of Jesus, because we are told to forgive as Christ forgave us. Unforgiveness can become a chain around the heart, while love is the bond of perfection that holds the Christian life together. The peace of God is also to rule in our hearts, acting like an umpire as we seek to walk in unity and wisdom.
Paul then calls us to let the word of Christ dwell in us richly in all wisdom, with teaching, admonition, psalms, hymns, spiritual songs, grace in the heart, and thanksgiving to God. The Word is not to remain outside us as information only. It is to dwell in us and shape our decisions, worship, speech, relationships, and daily conduct. Whatever we do, in word or deed, is to be done in the name of the Lord Jesus.
